Museum of Interconnectedness & Big Questions
The ARTIS Groote Museum is Amsterdam’s oldest museum building, originally completed in 1855 to showcase society’s scientific curiosities. Following an award-winning restoration, it reopened its doors as a 21st-century museum of questions and interconnectedness.
The museum poses an essential question: Are you different from a plant, a chimpanzee, or a stone, or are we fundamentally the same? Through playful interactive installations and body comparisons, visitors rediscover their place within the natural world.

An 1855 Architectural Landmark
Designed by master architect J. van Maurik in 1855, the Groote Museum is recognized as a premier National Heritage Monument (Rijksmonument):
- The Grand Two-Story Atrium: High ceilings, authentic wooden flooring, and massive skylights flood the central hall with warm, natural daylight.
- The Iconic Butterfly Staircase: A magnificent double wooden staircase links the ground floor with the upper gallery, offering striking views of the historic roof construction.
