Welcome to the ARTIS Groote Museum
Museum of Interconnectedness & Big Questions
The ARTIS Groote Museum is Amsterdam’s oldest museum building, originally completed in 1855 to showcase society’s scientific curiosities. Following an award-winning restoration, it reopened its doors as a 21st-century museum of questions and interconnectedness.
The museum poses an essential question: Are you different from a plant, a chimpanzee, or a stone, or are we fundamentally the same? Through playful interactive installations and body comparisons, visitors rediscover their place within the natural world.
Tickets & Admission Options
You can visit the Groote Museum on its own or alongside the zoo:
Groote Museum Only
Complete admission to the historic Groote Museum on Artisplein. Ideal for an inspiring 90-minute cultural experience.
ARTIS Zoo + Groote Museum
Combine full entry to the Royal Zoo (including the Aquarium and Planetarium) with the Groote Museum.
[!TIP] Save Time Online: Book in advance to secure your entry and scan your mobile barcode directly at the turnstiles.
An 1855 Architectural Landmark
Designed by master architect J. van Maurik in 1855, the Groote Museum is recognized as a premier National Heritage Monument (Rijksmonument):
- The Grand Two-Story Atrium: High ceilings, authentic wooden flooring, and massive skylights flood the central hall with warm, natural daylight.
- The Iconic Butterfly Staircase: A magnificent double wooden staircase links the ground floor with the upper gallery, offering striking views of the historic roof construction.
Multisensory Zones & Installations
Unlike traditional natural history museums with static showcases, the Groote Museum invites you to participate:
- Scent Stations: Smell forest soils, rain, and plant hormones that trigger subconscious emotions.
- Skeleton & Motion Comparisons: Mirror your own arm bones and movements against chimpanzees, horses, and birds to see shared evolutionary anatomy.
- Interactive Tunnel of Wonder: Journey through light, sound, and touch installations that reveal the rhythms of breathing and heartbeats across nature.
Visitor Tips
- Duration: 60 to 90 minutes is recommended.
- Location: Facing Artisplein at Plantage Middenlaan, easy to reach without entering zoo gates.
- Accessibility: Fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers via modern elevators.
Directions & Address
- Public Transit: Tram 14 from Amsterdam Central to ARTIS. Metro lines 51, 53, 54 to Waterlooplein.
- Address: Artisplein, Plantage Middenlaan 41a, 1018 CZ Amsterdam.
